GS LiFePO4 : gradients have not converged yet

Hi,

I'm studying LiFePO4 (Pnma 62 orthorombic, 28 atoms in unit cell).

1)I have prepared *.in file from cif(data_72545-ICSD) - https://github.com/materialsproject/pymatgen/blob/master/test_files/MultiStructure.cif

2)then I have fixed positions of Li atom (x y z : 0 0 0) and y = 1/4 of Fe, P, O1, O2 - as I understand from symmetry

3)For begining I choose potentials GGA.fhi - http://www.abinit.org/downloads/psp-links/gga_fhi

4)optcell = 2, ecut = 15 and k point grid = 4 x 7 x 9, ixc = 11

I have attached *.in, and 2 *.out files - one as result , one dump from console - to better understand my situation

I have very bad gradients convergence and don't know my mistake - I also tryied computations, for example, with unfixed all atoms (remove code with natfix and iatfix) or set optcell = 0 - doesn't change situation

may be need add options of spin-polarisation?

My final aim is elastic tensor of LFP.

Dear Evgenii,

A few comments:

- First of all, you don't have to fix atoms that are in high symmetric positions, such as Li, Abinit detects automatically the symmetries and will not move the atoms that are in high symmetric positions.
- Fe is magnetic such as you'll better run spin polarized calculations. If you don't do it you'll have to set up metallic occupations (occopt input flag) since by construction your system with partially occupied orbitals will be metallic.
- ecut=15 Ha is certainly too small for norm-conserving pseudopotentials, if you want to use small ecut you have to use PAW instead. Check your convergence once in production.
- in your calculations, you setup the number of relaxation steps (ntime flag) to 5 and 12. This is too small, you have to increase it in order to give enough relaxation steps for the program to converge (~50 will be better).

PS: You'll probably have to use LDA+U in order to treat correctly the d-orbitals of Fe.

I have success with occopt = 6 (I ve heard that this option good for transitional metal), besides occopt I use spin-polarized computation - for "Fe" - "+--+"(spin directions), potentials : *_ps.abinit.paw(paw from uspp), ntime 50

I dont fix Lithium position(LP) but I see that after convergence sometime LP != 0, 0 , 0 - slightly negative but close to 0, 0, 0

By default Abinit keeps the symmetries up to 1.0E-8 (see tolsym http://www.abinit.org/documentation/helpfiles/for-v7.6/input_variables/vargeo.html#tolsym), so I guess the deviation away from the high symmetric position should be very small.
